How Powerball works
Format: 5 main numbers from 1–69 plus one Powerball from 1–26. Draws: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 PM Eastern Time.
- Pick five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball from 1 to 26.
- Match all six to take the jackpot; eight smaller prize tiers pay out for partial matches, starting with the Powerball alone.
- The Power Play option multiplies non-jackpot prizes by 2x up to 10x for an extra cost per line.
- Double Play is a separate add-on drawing with its own set of numbers and a top prize of $10 million.
Powerball prize tiers
Powerball pays out across nine tiers. Matching all five white balls plus the Powerball wins the jackpot; five white balls alone pays $1 million; four plus the Powerball pays $50,000. From there prizes step down to $4 for matching just the Powerball. Every non-jackpot prize can be increased with the Power Play multiplier, and the optional Double Play add-on runs the same numbers through a second nightly drawing with its own prize chart that tops out at $10 million.
Odds and how the draw works
The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are about 1 in 24.9, and they improve sharply for the lower tiers — matching just the Powerball is roughly 1 in 38. Draws use two machines, one for the five white balls and one for the red Powerball, and the results are certified by independent auditors before they are released. That verification step is why official numbers usually appear a short time after the live drawing rather than instantly.
